Past Continuous (Affermativa, Interrogativa, Negativa)


​1. Quando si usa il Past Continuous?

Il Past Continuous viene utilizzato per:
Descrivere azioni che stavano accadendo in un momento preciso nel passato:
  • Esempio: I was reading a book at 8 PM. (Stavo leggendo un libro alle 8 di sera.)
Descrivere due o più azioni che stavano accadendo nello stesso momento nel passato:
  • Esempio: I was cooking dinner while my brother was playing video games. (Stavo cucinando la cena mentre mio fratello stava giocando ai videogiochi.)
Per azioni che erano in corso quando è successo un altro evento:
  • Esempio: I was walking to work when it started to rain. (Stavo andando al lavoro quando ha iniziato a piovere.)

2. Come si forma il Past Continuous?

Forma affermativa
La struttura del Past Continuous in forma affermativa è:​
​Soggetto +  was/were  +  verbo con la forma -ing (forma base + -ing).
Esempi:
  • I was eating dinner when the phone rang. (Stavo mangiando la cena quando è suonato il telefono.)
  • They were watching TV all evening. (Guardavano la TV tutta la sera.)

Forma negativa
​La forma negativa del Past Continuous si forma con 
Soggetto + was not (wasn’t) / were not (weren’t) + verbo con -ing.
Esempi:
  • I wasn’t watching TV when you called me. (Non stavo guardando la TV quando mi hai chiamato.)
  • We weren’t listening to music at that moment. (Non stavamo ascoltando la musica in quel momento.)

Forma interrogativa
​La forma interrogativa del Past Continuous si costruisce così​
Was/Were + soggetto + verbo con -ing ?
Esempi:
  • Was she studying when you arrived? (Stava studiando quando sei arrivato?)
  • Were you watching the movie last night? (Stavi guardando il film ieri sera?)

3. Parole chiave comuni con il Past Continuous
Alcune espressioni temporali che si usano spesso con il Past Continuous:
  • At 8 PM: alle 8 di sera
  • While: mentre
  • When: quando
  • At that moment: in quel momento
